CLARE MILLEN - PAINTER
I am a semi-abstract artist painting landscapes inspired by big skies, rugged coastlines and inclement weather. My work aims to capture atmosphere through the exploration of light, depth and colour.
Living on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens I am visually anchored by the bold sweeping horizon lines that dominate and dissect my surroundings. I enjoy immersing myself fully in these wide, open spaces, allowing the experience to become less about the view and more about the emotional feeling it evokes.
I like to paint in layers, building, scraping and scoring surfaces to expose the hidden history of colour and surface previously laid down. I am led by what is revealed and work intuitively until I feel the piece is resolved.
My finished paintings are abstract visions and amalgamations of memories, moods and feelings. They are nowhere yet everywhere. Places that resonate within us all.
Since completing a Fine Art Degree in 1993 I have exhibited my work in galleries throughout the United Kingdom, winning awards and undertaking numerous private commissions. I have been an active participant of Cambridge Open Studios for over two decades and exhibit annually.
