LORNA GILBERT - CERAMICIST
I’m a ceramicist making hand thrown white stoneware ceramics that are both functional and beautiful. I come from a fine art and textiles background and am fascinated with texture. I want my pots to be held, used, and enjoyed. My creative practice has developed over several years to bring together a beautiful range of pottery to compliment a simpler way of living.
I live in Yorkshire with my partner, two boys and our dog. I work from my studio in the garden which helps with the juggle of family life. I’m rarely happier than when I’ve got clay in my hands.
My current work is inspired by wilderness, the ocean and mountains. I am exploring the interplay between matte and gloss glazes as well as their interaction when mixed during firing.
This autumn sees the launch of my new Mustard Moon collection featuring hares and swifts. The hare can symbolise change and feminine energy and is also often linked with the moon’s energy. The swift is associated with change, travel, and communication. Swifts can also be signs of new beginnings.
We live in a fast-moving society where little attention is given to feeding our souls. I’m a great believer in treating ourselves and others with love and respect and putting value into the small things in life that give us pleasure, beautiful handmade objects can help reconnect and add to those precious moments. Using your favourite cup for your first coffee of the day and taking five minutes to sit outside in nature can become small daily rituals to help our mental wellbeing.
